I have smoked a couple of the Habano Anubis cigars from Warped and was very impressed. After speaking with the owner/manufacturer about the new Maduro wrapped Anubis I was beyond ecstatic about smoking one. Today I finally got the change to light one up.
Wrapper: Ecuadorian
Filler: Nicaraguan
Binder: Nicaraguan
Strength: Medium-Full
Size: 42 x 5
Price: $4.50
Pre-Light: The cigar is flawless. The wrapper is a nice roasted coffee color and gives off a nice barnyard scent with the addition of a nice spice. The triple cap on this baby was perfect and smooth. The cigar was nice a firm with a slight softness around the foot, but nothing to worry about.
1st Third: The flavors started off very similar to Habano Anubis. A nice cedar flavor with some spice with the addition of that traditional Maduro sweetness. I was surprised at how the sweetness lingered on my palette for a good 10 seconds after exhaling, this was very enjoyable.
2nd Third: Okay... this cigar is really living up to my expectations. The flavors are really picking up and a nice citrus undertone is becoming apparent. Around this point, it turned into the Dr. Pepper of cigars with about 23 flavors. Cedar, coffee, spice, pepper, cocoa, citrus, hay, and more. It was so complex my young palette was going crazy and I liked it.
Final Third: The cigar finished out strong with the same complexity and smoothness as the rest of this cigar.
Burn: Great, only needed one touch-up.
Final Thoughts: From what Kyle (owner) has told me, this cigar utilizes tobacco from the Jalapia region of Nicaragua which is what give the cigar its unique qualities. I must say, for the price this is best Maduro you can get. It is better than an Onyx Reserve, 5 Vegas A and on par with the DPG JJ Maduro. I have always likened the Anubis to a Pepin blend and this is definitely similar to the JJ Maduro if not better *and cheaper.* You really can't go wrong with this cigar. If Kyle were to pay CA enough money to review this stick, I honestly believe it would receive around a 93. If you like Maduros, Spice, and high complexity this is definitely the cigar for you and at $22 for a 5'er you really can't go wrong. My only regret with this cigar is that I only have 1 left.
